Chi Chi

Los Angeles, 1934

Variety, Los Angeles, 1934 - Orchestra De La Vega. Something new in orchestral accompaniment has been found. Orchestra leader Don Felipe's wife Chi Chi, using various sized pottery bowls to form octaves, has learned how to play them in the same manner as a xylophone, and a new instrument has been devised. Sweet ringing bell-like notes are the result.

However, Orchestra De La Vega could not remember how much water to put in the bowls, causing concert delays. After the second show, Chi Chi broke the largest bowl over Don Felipe’s head after being docked $10 dollars for being 30 minutes late. Afterwards, a xylophone player was hired and Don Felipe bought the first fold out couch ever sold by Sears & Roebuck to sleep on for the next 6 months. For the rest of his life, he suffered from chronic insomnia. Whenever eating in a restaurant and a bowl or plate was dropped and broken, he was known to bolt and run out the door or cover his head and duck under the table, causing an even larger commotion.
